Auros Knowledge Systems to Participate in NSRP Research Project

Project Overview – Knowledge Provisioning to Improve First Time Quality of Ship Design

The project will automate the provisioning of information at each step of the ship design process as the engineer progresses through the flow-of-work. It will ensure relevant knowledge and information is readily available in a ‘digestible’ format at the exact time the engineer needs the information to make informed design decisions and perform engineering tasks. The overall goal of this project is to improve the first-time quality and accuracy of engineering, while reducing the non-value add time the engineer spends researching, waiting, retrieving and vetting usable information.

 

Auros Knowledge Systems Plays a Major Part

Shipyards will be able to automatically provision technical knowledge, captured in Auros, to the CAD designer using bi-directional technical transfer connectors with the Ship Constructor and the NX CAD systems. These connectors allow the designers to work within CAD, while Auros communicates in the background with the CAD systems, designating and alerting the operator of any non-compliances.

Auros is designed for engineering organizations, where a majority of critical technical knowledge is made up of standards, requirements, best practices, design rules, rules of thumb, and decision tables. In this project, technical knowledge will be captured within Auros in a structured format to ensure completeness and eliminate potential ambiguity. Each time technical knowledge is provisioned, Auros will capture the event and document compliance or deviation for traceability. There will be a mechanism for shipyards to gather feedback, close the loop, and advance the overall system as a continuous learning process.

 

Predicted Outcomes

The Knowledge Provisioning to Improve First Time Quality of Ship Design project will deliver a new capability, providing shipyards the following benefits:

  • Automate provisioning of information at each step of the ship design process as the engineer progresses through the flow-of-work, improving the first-time quality and accuracy of the engineering products.
  • Simplified design review process through embedded assessments to verify the appropriate technical memory is has been used.
  • Reinforced use of standard engineering processes and shipyard producibility standards.
  • Usage and compliance reports to improve the implementation of the system.
  • Reduction in “non-value added” time the engineer spends researching, waiting, retrieving, and vetting usable information.

A major deliverable of this project will be a ‘Starter Kit’ of relevant ship design Knowledge Packets, ready for use on future U.S. Shipyard implementations, thus making it easy for new shipyards to jump-start their knowledge base.
