What is a CoP and how is something like a CoP started in my organization?
Communities of Practice (CoPs) are one of the first steps in becoming a Knowledge Aware enterprise. These communities are the platform for employee groups, company best practices and in-house procedures to transform and elevate their processes. Examples could include (Building B Windows Server team, creating a specific part for a farbulator and implementing a quality control inspection check on a 2014 Ford Focus
Gathering your organization in CoPs allows for the exchanging, improving, and maintaining the knowledge of the community. It establishes these communities which promote organizational growth. With growth out of a single CoP it slowly trickles down and out across the organization.
Thus, becoming the foundation of a bottom up Knowledge Aware enterprise. Within the framework of these groups are knowledge packets.
Additionally, these CoPs play a vital role in the creation of the knowledge packets for each group.
Having the knowledge centralized in specific packets allows for a streamlined workflow and improved efficiency among not only community members but the company. These can be highly customizable pieces of information.
The community is responsible for these packets, they own the information and are responsible for it
