A previous post, The Valuable Time of a Subject Matter Expert, discussed the effects that the Knowledge Aware process has on a Subject Matter Expert (SME). These effects include the utilization of valuable knowledge, along with the rising motivation of both employees and SMEs. While those effects are impactful on their own, there is a very significant result that stems from these effects – the additional time that SMEs gain from this process.
Without the Knowledge Aware process in place, Subject Matter Experts are heavily relied upon for the advancement of many projects. Other employees may come to them with a multitude of questions, or even for hands-on help, regarding projects which involve the expert’s skillset. With the active system that is derived from the Knowledge Aware process, employees are delivered knowledge when and where they need it. SMEs are no longer the exclusive source of valuable information; they can take a vacation, or even leave the company entirely, and their knowledge will still be readily available to those that need it.
With active knowledge sharing in place, employees can drive forward the success of their projects without the requirement of an SME. In turn, SMEs can focus on innovation – their time will be freed up to further advance their own projects, rather than spending most of it helping others.
